How We Research
Every guide on Yellow Lanes starts with one question: does this detector suit the driver who is shopping for it? A highway commuter, a weekend road-tripper and a city driver each need something a little different.
Here is how we work it out.
1. We start with how you drive
Long open highways, busy city streets and mixed daily driving put different demands on a detector. City driving brings more false alerts from store doors and car safety systems.
So we look first at range, filtering and GPS features, and we say which kind of driver each pick suits.
2. We compare specs and features
We check the bands each detector covers, its laser coverage, GPS lockouts, directional arrows, Bluetooth or app alerts, the display, the mount and how it gets power. We also check how firmware updates work.
Uniden, Cobra, Escort, Radenso and Valentine each describe their detectors in their own words. So we name the brand behind every performance claim, and we note the warranty terms the maker gives.
3. We look at owner feedback
We read what owners report after months of use. We look for patterns, like constant false alerts, weak mounts, dim screens, update trouble or short range.
One bad review doesn't sink a detector. A pattern does.
4. We score each product
Our score weighs specs, features and owner feedback against what the guide's reader needs. A detector that's ideal for a highway commuter may score lower in a guide about value.
Scores spread out on purpose. A 10 is rare.
5. We keep pages current
Detector lines change fast, and new models replace old ones under very close names. We check each model number and link only new units, never renewed ones.
When we change a guide, the "Updated on" date at the top changes too.
What our picks are not
Our picks are research, not road tests. We don't claim to have driven with every detector we cover.
A detector can't promise you'll see every signal in time, and no alert is a reason to drive faster than the posted limit. Detectors are not allowed in some places, so check the current rules for your state and vehicle.
